The BMI Formula

The math behind BMI is simple. Two inputs, one division, one number.

METRIC: BMI = WEIGHT [kg] ÷ HEIGHT² [m²]
IMPERIAL: BMI = (WEIGHT [lbs] ÷ HEIGHT² [in²]) × 703

For example, a person who weighs 75 kg and stands 1.75 m tall: BMI = 75 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 75 ÷ 3.0625 = 24.5. That falls in the normal range. The same person at 80 kg would be 26.1, classifying as overweight. Small weight changes shift BMI noticeably for shorter individuals and less for taller ones.

What Is a Healthy BMI?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is classified as healthy for most adults. Within this range, the lowest mortality risk in large population studies typically clusters around BMI 22 to 23. People at the lower end of normal (18.5 to 20) tend to have slightly lower body fat, while the upper end (23 to 24.9) often includes muscular individuals whose extra weight is lean tissue.

Note on athletic populations: If you lift weights regularly or have above-average muscle mass, BMI will overestimate your fat level. Limitations of BMI

BMI was designed in the 1830s as a population statistic, not a personal diagnostic. It has real, well-documented blind spots that everyone using it should understand.

  • Cannot distinguish muscle from fat. A 90 kg lifter and a 90 kg sedentary person of the same height get identical BMI scores even though their body compositions differ wildly.
  • Ignores fat distribution. Visceral fat around the abdomen carries more health risk than subcutaneous fat on the hips, but BMI sees them as identical.
  • Less accurate for short or very tall people. The math has known biases at the extremes of the height distribution.
  • Does not adjust for age. Older adults naturally lose muscle and gain fat, so a "normal" BMI in a 70-year-old can mask significant body fat increases.
  • Was based primarily on European populations. Some research suggests Asian populations face elevated metabolic risk at lower BMIs (23 to 24) than Western populations.
  • Cannot detect hidden weight loss. Someone losing muscle while gaining fat may keep the same BMI while actually getting less healthy.

To Lower a High BMI (Lose Weight Healthily)

  • Run a moderate caloric deficit of 300 to 500 calories below maintenance
  • Prioritize protein at 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kg of bodyweight to preserve muscle
  • Strength train at least twice weekly to keep lean mass during the deficit
  • Add 150 to 300 minutes of moderate cardio per week for heart health
